“Every day is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present”… I’ve seen that quote posted online a lot lately, and when I sat down to blog about a beautiful little girl that I had in the studio recently, it came to mind. I met Eva and her mom, Tina, when they came to my studio for photos on Eva’s 2nd birthday. A sweet, vibrant two year old, I had no hint of the obstacles that Little Miss Eva had already faced in her very short time on this earth. She had just awoken from a nap when they arrived, so her mom helped her change into her first outfit. As she pulled her shirt up, I noticed a faint scar on her chest, but didn’t ask questions. Shortly after, Tina told me that Eva had basically been born with half a heart, and had gone through multiple heart surgeries, spending the better part of her first year in the hospital. This little sweetheart in front of me was a miracle child…a gift indeed!

As I photographed her and let her story soak in, I continued to be amazed at the fact that she was so much like every other two year old I’ve known… active, funny, petulant at times, sweet as can be, cute as a button, and unless you were told, you would have no idea of all she had been through, which brings another quote to mind. “Be Kind. For everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about” by Wendy Mass. I’m sure this mom and daughter will face more battles in the years ahead, but likely none as great as the battle they’ve already overcome! If you are facing difficulty in your life, I hope you will read Eva’s story and know there is hope, and that the battles you’re going through don’t have to define you. This little miracle and her mom may have scars, but they are survivors, and I find them and their story truly inspiring. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for little Miss Eva – she is here for a reason, and I think she’s destined for greatness! Tina, thank you for choosing me to be your photographer, and allowing me to share your story.
